Trumpism's most telling and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.
We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense of him since they are atheists or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, a baby is born to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion rather a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We shall require to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?
The nation is most protected, essentially, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it mean pretending the worst of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it means both modesty and faith, a mixture that genuine US believers should embrace.
