Whenever a major honors show draws close, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
