Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
