European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
